Proun IV – Blad 4 van het I. Kestnerportfolio, Proun
1923
El Lissitzky called his wild geometric experiments 'Prouns,' short for 'Project for the Affirmation of the New,' and this 1923 piece is a fantastic example. A massive, heavy black circle seems to float in mid-air, anchored only by thin, precise lines and a sharp grey diagonal beam that looks like it's slicing through space. Lissitzky wasn't just making pretty shapes; he was trying to bridge the gap between flat painting and actual 3D architecture, creating a visual blueprint for a brand new world. The tiny cross-hatched details and stark contrasts give it the feel of a futuristic architect's dream.
