アヴィニョンの聖ベネゼ
Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale captures a moment of miraculous strength in this Pre-Raphaelite style illustration. A barefoot young St. Bénézet, glowing with a golden halo, balances a massive rock on his shoulder—a feat he performed to prove he was divinely chosen to build a bridge. Behind him rises the famous Pont d'Avignon and its chapel, the very structure he was inspired to construct. This legend lives on today in the beloved French children's song 'Sur le pont d'Avignon,' though the real bridge is now mostly in ruins!
