Leonardo da Vinci painted this stunning scene when he was just a young apprentice in his early twenties, and you can already see his genius budding. The Archangel Gabriel kneels in a lush, flower-filled garden to deliver the news to Mary, who looks up from her book with a mix of surprise and grace. Notice Mary's right arm? It looks a bit oddly long and stiff - art historians debate whether young Leonardo was still mastering anatomy or if it's a clever trick meant to look perfect when viewed from the side. The incredibly detailed landscape in the background, with its misty mountains and cypress trees, hints at the revolutionary artist he would become.
