Der Operationsraum
1942
Painted in 1942 during his brief but prolific stint as an official war artist, Eric Ravilious captures the quiet tension of an RAF operations room. Instead of showing the chaos of battle, he focuses on the eerie calm before the storm, featuring tables draped in white cloths and a distinctive clock marked with red and blue triangles to track squadron movements. Faint pencil sketches of airplanes ghost across the windows, hinting at the action happening just outside. Tragically, Ravilious disappeared over Iceland later that same year, making this serene, almost hauntingly empty room one of his final masterpieces.
