Campanariae. – Glockenpolypen by Ernst Haeckel, 1904

Ernst Haeckel's stunning 1904 plate from Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature) transforms microscopic marine life into a botanical dreamscape. Look closely at the delicate, curling tentacles and bell-shaped structures of these 'Glockenpolypen' (bell polyps)—they look more like alien flora than sea creatures! Haeckel was a biologist first, but his obsession with symmetry and intricate detail accidentally birthed a visual language that deeply inspired the Art Nouveau movement. Architects and designers of the early 20th century practically raided his sketchbooks for organic, flowing patterns.
