Flagellata. – Zweepdiertjes by Ernst Haeckel, 1904

German biologist Ernst Haeckel created these intricate drawings of microscopic flagellates to prove that nature is the ultimate artist. Published in his famous 1904 book 'Kunstformen der Natur' (Art Forms in Nature), these tiny, whip-tailed organisms look like something out of a fantasy novel with their swirling stems and fan-like shapes. The stunning symmetry and organic curves actually helped inspire the Art Nouveau movement, showing that science and beauty go hand in hand. Haeckel believed these little creatures were living proof of evolution's elegance.
