Artillerymen
1914 - 1915
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner captured the raw, unsettling reality of military life in this jagged, angular scene of soldiers in a bathhouse. Painted right around the outbreak of World War I, the stark contrast between the vulnerable, naked men huddled under the showers and the rigid, uniformed officer standing guard is striking. It's a perfect example of German Expressionism, using distorted forms and harsh colors to convey psychological tension rather than physical reality.
