Bathers by the Lake
1907
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner captures a lazy summer day with wild, scribbly energy in this 1907 watercolor. Two figures lounge in a vibrant, almost neon landscape of greens and blues, looking more like sketches from a dream than a realistic photo. This piece is a classic example of German Expressionism, specifically from his 'Die Brücke' period, where artists wanted to break free from tradition and paint raw emotion. Notice the bright red lips and eyes on the kneeling figure—it's a bold, almost jarring splash of color that makes the scene pop!
