Mesa de comedor-sanatorio
1916
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner created this chaotic dining scene while recovering from a severe nervous breakdown at a sanatorium in 1916, shortly after being discharged from the military. As a key figure in German Expressionism, he ditched realistic proportions for jagged, frantic lines that seem to vibrate with anxiety. The diners in the background look almost skeletal and ghostly, while the two figures in the foreground stare out with haunted, hollow eyes. It’s a raw, unfiltered look at mental fragility, turning a simple dinner into a psychological drama.
