Portrait of a Man
1910
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner slashes bold, jagged lines across the paper to capture the raw, nervous energy of a man in a hat. As a founding member of the German Expressionist group Die Brücke, Kirchner rejected polite, realistic portraiture in favor of pure emotional intensity. The heavy black ink pools in the deep-set eyes and sharp nose, making the subject look almost haunted or deeply anxious. This quick, aggressive sketch perfectly captures the urban tension and psychological angst that defined the rebellious avant-garde scene in Berlin just before World War I.
