Irises (1890) 2
1890
Vincent van Gogh painted this vibrant bouquet of blue irises against a striking yellow background while staying at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in 1890. The thick, swirling brushstrokes give the flowers an almost electric energy, making them look like they are dancing right out of the simple terracotta vase. He actually painted this specific version as a study, experimenting with bold color contrasts just months before his tragic death. It's a perfect example of his Post-Impressionist style, where emotion and color take center stage over realistic detail.
