Veleiros em Fehmarn
1914
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner captured the jagged energy of the sea in this striking woodcut, created just before the outbreak of World War I. The bold, angular sails slice through the composition like shards of glass, while the figures in the boat appear almost frozen in the choppy waters near the island of Fehmarn. As a founding member of the Die Brücke movement, Kirchner used this high-contrast style to express raw emotion rather than realistic detail, turning a simple sailing trip into a dramatic, almost chaotic scene.
