Seascape with Ships
c. 1660
Jan van de Cappelle was a master of capturing the moody, dramatic skies of the Dutch Golden Age, and this bustling harbor scene is a perfect example. Notice how the massive, billowing clouds take up almost two-thirds of the canvas, dwarfing the busy fishing boats below. He was famous for his incredibly calm water reflections, which he achieved by painting the sky first and then mirroring it perfectly on the surface. It's a peaceful snapshot of 17th-century maritime life, where the weather is always the real star of the show.
