Blick aus dem Fenster
c.1914
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner throws out the rulebook on realistic colors here, giving us a cityscape with a sickly green sky and buildings that practically scream in bright yellow and red. As a leader of the German Expressionist group Die Brücke, he used jagged, frantic brushstrokes to capture the nervous energy of the modern world rather than just what it looked like. That massive, dark blue tower looming over the diagonal bridge feels almost like a monster watching over the tiny, blocky houses below. It's a perfect snapshot of the artistic rebellion brewing in Europe right before World War I changed everything.
