Berck; the Return of the Boats
1890
Eugène Boudin, often called the 'King of Skies,' dominates this canvas with a massive, brooding cloud formation that takes up nearly two-thirds of the view. Below, the wet sands of the French coastal town of Berck reflect the tiny figures of fishermen returning from the sea and the dark hulls of beached boats. Boudin was a crucial mentor to Claude Monet, famously dragging the young artist out of the studio to paint the changing light and weather directly from nature. This loose, breezy style paved the way for the entire Impressionist movement, capturing a fleeting moment of everyday coastal life before the tide comes back in.
