Breton Shore
circa 1870-1873
Look at that massive sky taking up two-thirds of the view! Eugène Boudin was so good at painting clouds that Corot called him the 'King of Skies,' and this Breton harbor scene shows exactly why. He was a master of painting outdoors to capture fleeting light, a technique he actually taught to a young Claude Monet, helping spark the whole Impressionist movement. The loose brushstrokes make the water and rustic houses look like a breezy, fleeting moment frozen in time around 1870.
