The Combat

The Combat by Eugène Delacroix

Delacroix throws us right into a chaotic North African skirmish, where a rider on a rearing chestnut horse lunges with a spear at a defending foot soldier, his black cape billowing like a storm cloud. Another rider on a white horse charges in from the left, adding to the confusion of the battle. The loose, frantic brushstrokes are a hallmark of Romanticism, prioritizing raw emotion and violent movement over polished detail. Inspired by his 1832 trip to Morocco, Delacroix became obsessed with depicting the intensity of Arab life, trading academic stiffness for something much more visceral and immediate.
