The Festivals of Paris. Fluctuat nec mergitur by Eugène Grasset, 1886

Eugène Grasset blasts us back to medieval times with this vibrant 1886 poster announcing the festivities of Paris. A trumpeter in colorful, patterned garb rides a spirited white horse, blowing a long horn that seems to announce the very title of the work. Notice the coat of arms on the right bearing the famous Latin motto of Paris, 'Fluctuat nec mergitur' (tossed but not sunk), complete with a ship riding the waves. This piece is a fantastic early example of Grasset's style, blending medieval imagery with the decorative flair that would soon define Art Nouveau.
