At Dusk
1902
Swirling, chaotic lines create a ghostly ship floating on a dark, restless sea in this moody 1902 work by Swedish artist Eugène Jansson. Known as the 'painter of the night,' Jansson captured the atmospheric twilight of Stockholm harbor, usually famous for his deep blue oil paintings. Here, however, he uses scratchy, energetic strokes to dissolve the vessel into the mist, creating a dreamlike vibe. He was close friends with the playwright August Strindberg, and both shared a fascination with the mystical side of nature, making this a perfect example of Symbolist atmosphere where mood matters more than realistic detail.
