Circus Scene by Eugène Jansson, 1913-1914

Swedish artist Eugène Jansson traded his famous moody blue cityscapes for the sawdust ring of the circus in this dynamic scene from around 1913. A muscular acrobat balances precariously on a dark horse while hoisting a partner high above his head, their reddish-orange bodies glowing like embers against the shadowy crowd. Though linked to the Symbolist movement, the rough, energetic strokes capture the sheer tension and adrenaline of the performance rather than a dreamlike state. Jansson was fascinated by the male form and spent hours at the Stockholm circus sketching these feats of strength, making you feel like you're sitting right there in the front row.
