Storytime
In this cozy, rustic scene, an elderly man in a straw hat captivates two young boys with a lively tale, gesturing dramatically as they sit barefoot on the stone floor. A woman pauses her chores, leaning forward with a pitcher in hand to listen in, while cats and chickens wander freely around the hearth. Italian painter Eugenio Zampighi was a master of these charming genre scenes, capturing the warmth of 19th-century rural family life with incredible detail. The crumbling brick walls and massive fireplace set the stage for a timeless moment of connection, proving that long before smartphones, a good story by the fire was the best entertainment around.
