Nanny and Child
1877-1878
Eva Gonzalès, the only formal student of Édouard Manet, captures a quiet, candid moment in this charming Impressionist scene. A nanny, dressed in a voluminous white gown and hat, sits patiently on a garden path while a young boy in a blue sailor suit peers curiously through a wooden gate. The bright white of her dress contrasts beautifully with the dark, dappled foliage surrounding them, and a discarded blue umbrella rests casually on the ground, suggesting a sudden break in the weather. Painted in the late 1870s, this piece showcases Gonzalès's talent for capturing light and everyday life, stepping out of her famous teacher's shadow to create something entirely her own.
