Girl with Cherries
c. 1870
As the only formal student of Édouard Manet, Eva Gonzalès captures a young woman pausing mid-task, clutching a small knife beside a few scattered, bright red cherries. The loose, expressive brushstrokes and the striking contrast of the black-and-white striped shawl against the deep, dark background show her deep connection to the early Impressionist movement. Though she died tragically young at just 34—only days after her beloved teacher—her bold, confident portraits prove she was a masterful artist in her own right, not just a famous protégé.
