Snowy Landscape with Cold Forests (New) 128×103
Fan Kuan’s 'Snowy Forest in Winter' is a stunning example of Northern Song dynasty monumental landscape painting that captures the quiet majesty of a frozen world. The scene is dominated by a massive, snow-covered mountain range that looms over a serene landscape, rendered with meticulous texture strokes that give the rocks a rugged, tactile feel. In the foreground, a dense cluster of bare, gnarled trees—the 'cold forest' of the title—stands stark against the white snow, their intricate branches drawn with precise, crab-claw strokes. Tucked away in the mid-ground rocks is a tiny pavilion, a classic touch that reminds the viewer of humanity's humble place within the vast, majestic natural world.
