St Lawrence
In this dramatic Baroque scene, a youthful Saint Lawrence reclines gracefully on a rich blue drape, his gaze fixed hopefully on the heavens above. Hovering over him are two chubby cherubs—one brandishing a palm frond and the other a golden crown, classic symbols of martyrdom and heavenly reward. The artist, Felice Ficherelli, uses soft lighting to highlight the saint's serene expression and muscular form against a dark, moody background, capturing a moment of divine anticipation rather than the gruesome gridiron torture he's famous for.
