The Bath
Félix Vallotton turns a mundane bath time into a dramatic study of high-contrast geometry. A massive, ink-black bathtub dominates the room, making the chubby baby and the waiting figure look like stark white silhouettes against the gloom. The checkered floor adds a dizzying pattern beneath them, while two little ducks on the wall provide the only hint of playfulness. Vallotton was a master of the woodcut, a technique that forced him to carve away the white space to create bold, graphic images that feel surprisingly modern—almost like a panel from a silent comic strip.
