The Cardinal
1863
Ferdinand Heilbuth captures a quiet moment of hierarchy and humility in this 1863 scene. A young choirboy, dressed in purple, nervously kisses the ring of a towering Cardinal draped in brilliant red robes, while his peers watch with a mix of awe and boredom. To the right, two dandyish figures in green coats lean against the balustrade, seemingly more interested in gossip than the religious ceremony. Heilbuth, a German painter who spent much of his life in Paris, was famous for these elegant, slice-of-life scenes that often poked gentle fun at social conventions and the clergy.
