Rider with Two Lead Horses, One Kicks Out, in the Background a Wagon and Other Riders
1775
Ferdinand Kobell captures a moment of pure equine chaos in this energetic 1775 sketch. A rider in the center struggles to control a rearing horse, while the horse beside him violently kicks out, sending a small dog scrambling for safety in the foreground. To the right, a carriage and another rider seem to be waiting out the commotion, while distant figures on the left watch the drama unfold. Kobell was a German master of animal painting, and here his loose, scratchy ink lines perfectly convey the panic and raw movement of the scene, making you almost hear the neighing and hooves.
