The Satyr
1886-1889
Dominated by dramatic reddish-brown hues, this energetic sketch depicts a mythological encounter where a towering, primitive hunter with a quiver of arrows gently guides a smaller, goat-legged satyr by the hand. They gaze upward toward a swirling, cloud-filled realm populated by nymphs, cherubs, and shadowy architecture. Fernand Cormon was a heavyweight of the French Academic art world, famous for his prehistoric and historical scenes. Ironically, while he painted traditional subjects like this, his Paris studio became the training ground for avant-garde rebels like Vincent van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who would eventually reject his very style.
