Modern Times The Arts, 1911
Fernand Cormon, a giant of the French Academic world, created this swirling vision of progress around 1911. You can see the tension of the era right there: serious men in suits and classical figures emerge from a misty, industrial landscape, with a factory belching smoke in the upper right. It’s a grand tribute to 'Modern Times' and the Arts, capturing the shift from the old world to the industrial age. Interestingly, while Cormon’s own style remained traditional and grand, he ran a famous Paris studio that taught rebellious students like Vincent van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec!
