The Adoration in the Forest by Filippo Lippi, 1459

Filippo Lippi swaps the traditional stable for a mysterious, dark forest in this 1459 Renaissance masterpiece. Mary, draped in flowing blue, kneels in prayer over the infant Jesus, while God the Father and the Holy Spirit hover dramatically above in a burst of golden rays. The young John the Baptist stands nearby, holding a banner, looking a bit serious for a toddler. Lippi was actually a monk who famously ran off with a nun, Lucrezia Buti, who likely modeled for his Madonnas—adding a touch of real-world romance to this divine scene.
