The Nativity
1504
Fra Bartolomeo painted this serene Nativity scene in 1504, shortly after returning to art following a four-year hiatus where he became a Dominican friar! The composition is perfectly balanced, with Joseph in vibrant red robes kneeling on the left and Mary in deep blue on the right, both adoring the baby Jesus. Above them, three angels float in a colorful arc, while a detailed landscape with a distant city stretches into the background. The visible crackling across the surface hints at its age, showcasing the beautiful, harmonious style of the High Renaissance.
