The Madonna and Child
Fra Bartolomeo captures a tender, almost human moment between the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus in this circular masterpiece, known as a tondo. Notice how Mary's sheer veil floats around her head, framing the intimate kiss she's about to share with the child. The rich, satin-like folds of her blue and green cloak show off the artist's incredible skill with fabric, a hallmark of the High Renaissance style. While religious art of the time often feels stiff and formal, this piece feels surprisingly warm and personal, as if we've just stumbled into a private family moment in a serene landscape.
