Vierge à l’Enfant
Francesco Francia brings a touch of serene calm to this classic Madonna and Child scene, typical of the Bolognese Renaissance style. Notice the baby Jesus, who looks more like a sturdy, chubby toddler than a newborn, casually perched on a closed book while giving a little blessing gesture. Mary wears a rich red dress under a sweeping blue-green veil, her gentle gaze meeting ours while a peaceful, detailed landscape stretches out behind them with tiny figures going about their day. Francia was actually a goldsmith before becoming a painter, which might explain the smooth, polished look of the figures and the careful attention to the folds in Mary's heavy robe.
