A View of the Molo and the Riva degli Schiavone in Venice by Francesco Guardi, ca. 1750

Francesco Guardi was the master of capturing Venice's fleeting atmosphere, often painting the city just as its golden age was beginning to fade. Here, he depicts the bustling waterfront near the Doge's Palace, where nobles in tricorn hats mingle with everyday workers and dogs wander freely along the quay. Unlike his rival Canaletto, who painted Venice with rigid, photographic precision, Guardi used loose, sketchy brushstrokes to capture the shimmering light and lively movement of the city. It feels less like a formal portrait of a city and more like a vibrant, spontaneous snapshot of 18th-century Venetian life.
