Rinaldo and the Mirror-Shield
about 1650[-]1655
Francesco Maffei brings a scene from Torquato Tasso's epic poem 'Jerusalem Delivered' to life with dramatic Baroque flair. The sorceress Armida holds up a polished shield to the knight Rinaldo, using his own reflection to trap him in vanity and distract him from the Crusades. While Rinaldo stares mesmerized at his image, Armida looks down with a complex mix of sorrow and cunning, hinting at the tragic romance to come.
