The Nativity
1600
Francesco Vanni captures the dramatic moment of Christ's birth in this dynamic Baroque sketch from around 1600. Instead of a peaceful, quiet scene, the artist fills the composition with energy: a winged angel swoops down from the heavens, surrounded by a choir of cherubs, to announce the arrival of the glowing infant Jesus. Mary and Joseph kneel in reverence on either side of the manger, their faces illuminated by the divine light radiating from the baby, while a humble ox looks on from the shadows. This preparatory drawing showcases Vanni's mastery of light and movement, typical of the Baroque era's love for theatricality and emotion.
