Elihu Vedder
c. 1882
Francis Hopkinson Smith captured his friend, the famous illustrator Elihu Vedder, in this lively sketch from around 1882. Vedder, best known for his mystical illustrations of the *Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam*, stares out with a serious expression and a prominent mustache. The page features a bold graphite study at the top and a fainter blue pencil version in the corner, almost like a doodle in a sketchbook. The handwritten notes at the bottom suggest this sheet was kept and annotated years later, preserving a candid moment of artistic camaraderie between two Gilded Age creatives.
