Middle Eastern Scene Outside a Mosque
Francis Hopkinson Smith captures a vibrant, sun-baked moment in an Ottoman square, likely Constantinople, where a grand structure with a massive overhanging roof serves as a cozy perch for a flock of pigeons. In the distance, a mosque minaret rises against a clear blue sky while figures in traditional dress and horses animate the dusty plaza. Interestingly, before becoming a celebrated painter known for his travel sketches, Smith was a civil engineer who actually designed the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty!
