Faun's Head

Faun's Head by Francis Picabia, circa 1934-1935

Francis Picabia was a serial reinventer, and by the mid-1930s, he had ditched his earlier Dada antics for these bold, primitive-looking 'monster heads.' Here, he gives us a faun—a mythological half-goat creature—rendered with thick, black outlines and a mask-like brown face that feels both ancient and strangely modern. The swirling horns and vibrant red lips pop against the cool blue background, showing how he mashed up Cubist fragmentation with a raw, almost cartoonish energy. It’s a playful nod to mythology, but with a jagged edge that refuses to be polite.
