Portrait of Modigliani
1922-24
Francis Picabia created this playful, almost mocking tribute to his fellow artist Amedeo Modigliani around 1922, a few years after Modigliani's tragic death. Instead of a grand, serious portrait, a tiny, pale face floats like a ghost inside a massive, heavy blob of black ink. The handwriting scrawled around the edges—including the title written upside down at the top—gives it the feel of a quick, spontaneous doodle on a napkin. It perfectly captures the rebellious spirit of the era, where artists loved to subvert expectations and poke fun at traditional art.
