Girl on a swing, a man with his arms raised
1795-1797
Imagine a sunny afternoon in 1790s Spain: Francisco de Goya is sketching furiously as a young woman swings high into the air, her hair wild and arms outstretched in pure delight. A dashing gentleman in breeches reaches up towards her, his pose dramatic and full of energy, as if he's part of the game. This loose, lively drawing comes from one of Goya's private albums, created just before he became famous for his dark and haunting 'Black Paintings.' It’s a rare, playful glimpse into the artist's life, showing he wasn't always obsessed with witches and nightmares!
