A woman wearing the saya standing in profile by Francisco Fierro, ca. 1848

Francisco 'Pancho' Fierro loved documenting the vibrant street life of 19th-century Lima in a realistic style, and this sketch captures the mysterious allure of the 'Tapada Limeña.' Wrapped in a tight, dark skirt and a white shawl, the woman’s face is concealed by a black veil, leaving only one flirtatious eye peeking out. The handwritten note 'Saya antigua' at the bottom reveals Fierro was acting as a fashion historian, preserving an older style of dress that allowed women to walk the streets with bold anonymity.
