An elegantly dressed man on horseback
ca. 1848
Francisco "Pancho" Fierro was a 19th-century Peruvian artist who acted like a visual journalist, capturing the everyday fashion and social types of Lima with incredible charm. This lively sketch, labeled "Caballero de paseo" (Gentleman on a stroll) at the bottom, features a dashing rider in a vibrant blue poncho and wide-brimmed hat confidently guiding his prancing grey horse. Fierro created hundreds of these watercolors, essentially documenting Peruvian culture and street life just before photography took over the world, making them invaluable historical records today.
