A Lion, Full Face by Eugène Delacroix, 1841

Delacroix was absolutely obsessed with lions, often visiting the menagerie at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris to sketch these majestic beasts. This sheet, dated August 30, 1841, reveals his working process, featuring a striking central portrait of a lion staring right at the viewer, flanked by two looser profile studies. You can even see his handwritten notes in French, like 'pour clair' (for light) and 'moyen brun' (medium brown), giving us a peek into how he planned the colors and shading for a future painting.
