Tailor Shop
ca. 1850
Francisco "Pancho" Fierro was a self-taught Peruvian artist of African descent who became the ultimate chronicler of 19th-century Lima street life. In this lively scene, a tailor sits hunched over his work board on the cobblestones, completely absorbed in his craft while a rooster struts by and neighbors look on. Notice the distinctive green enclosed balcony in the upper right—a classic architectural feature of colonial Lima that Fierro captured perfectly in his beloved series documenting everyday trades and fashion.
