Contadina, plate 7
18th century
François Boucher, the ultimate Rococo showman, loved to romanticize rural life, and this charming print is a perfect example. Titled 'Contadina' (Italian for peasant woman), it features a young woman in elaborate rustic attire, complete with a ruffled collar and a basket she clutches like a precious treasure. Engraved by Gabriel Huquier from Boucher's original drawing, it was part of an 18th-century craze for costume prints that made country living look effortlessly chic. While real peasants were busy working the fields, Boucher’s version is all about fashion and fantasy!
