Hunting Nymphs by François Boucher

François Boucher, the ultimate master of French Rococo fluff, gives us a scene that is less about hunting animals and more about the hunt for romance. Here, two nymphs take a break in the woods; one playfully pulls a thread from the sleeping beauty's mouth, a flirtatious parlor game of the time. While a dead bird lies nearby to justify the title, the real prey here is clearly the viewer's attention. Boucher was the favorite artist of Madame de Pompadour, and his work is famous for its pastel colors, soft skin, and unapologetic sensuality that defined the lavish, carefree spirit of 18th-century France.
