The Judgment of Paris
1602
Joachim Wtewael's 1602 masterpiece throws a mythological beauty pageant into a crowded, chaotic forest for his take on the Judgment of Paris. The Trojan prince, sporting a flashy red hat on the right, is about to make the fateful decision between three goddesses—Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite—who stand before him, with one clutching the golden apple of discord. A flying cupid hovers above pointing the way, while the foreground is packed with reclining figures, playful dogs, and scattered fruit. This is classic Mannerism: the figures are elongated, the poses are twisted and complex, and the composition is delightfully crowded, creating a sense of chaotic elegance.
