Pastoral Scene
1767
François Boucher, the ultimate darling of the French Rococo movement and favorite painter of Madame de Pompadour, loved to paint fantasy versions of country life that were far cleaner and cuter than reality. Here, we see a perfectly staged rustic scene where everyone is gorgeous, from the woman balancing a basket of grapes on her shoulder to the chubby toddlers gently wrestling a fluffy sheep. Notice the signature 'Boucher 1767' carved right into the stone in the bottom left corner—he was making sure everyone knew who created this fluffy, cloud-filled daydream of pastoral elegance.
